Why is there a comma here?

It is difficult to be certain why there is a comma after "Since then". The phrase could be a break in a thought that was expressed in the previous sentence therefore acting as a transitional phrase and needing a comma to set it off. The phrase does not add to the sense of the sentence in which it appears and could be omitted unless it connects this sentence with previous information.
